Raising sheep is of little value unless they multiply. For that, we needed a ram. Last November, we invested in Rambo, a 2-year-old Katahdin. The timing was designed to breed our 8 ewes for May lambing when the weather is warming and the pastures lush.
But May came and went – and not a single ewe was bred. This, mind you, despite all appearances to the contrary. Rambo got right to work, but has been apparently “shooting blanks”. This was a frustrating disappointment since we should have 20 sheep on the pasture by now, but our breeder is a stand-up guy who agreed to deliver a replacement ram at no cost to us.
This new guy is a relative youngster at just 9 months of age. He’s like a skinny teenager compared to Rambo, but we hope he can get it done. Rambo, in the meantime, has a date with a local meat processor in Late January.
